FINISH Mondial Bangladesh and ITN-BUET are excited to jointly host a virtual workshop on December 11, 2024, to showcase the groundbreaking Climate Resilient Toilet (CRT) technology. This session aims to bring together global and local stakeholders to explore the design, functionality, and impact of this innovative solution tailored for regions prone to flooding and waterlogging.

About FINISH Mondial Bangladesh

FINISH Mondial Bangladesh is part of the global FINISH Mondial programme, which works toward creating sustainable and inclusive sanitation systems through innovative partnerships and solutions. The Bangladesh team has been at the forefront of introducing technologies and approaches that address local challenges, particularly in areas affected by climate change and environmental vulnerabilities. By collaborating with government bodies, microfinance institutions, and community stakeholders, FINISH Mondial Bangladesh aims to ensure access to safely managed sanitation for all.

About ITN-BUET

The International Training Network (ITN) Centre at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is a leading hub for research, capacity building, and advocacy in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. Over the years, ITN-BUET has been instrumental in advancing sustainable sanitation solutions through its partnerships with organizations like FINISH Mondial.

FINISH Mondial Bangladesh and CRT Piloting

The Climate Resilient Toilet (CRT) is an affordable, sustainable, and climate-adaptive sanitation solution designed to withstand the challenges of flooding and waterlogging. The innovative design, developed by sanitation expert Dr. P.K. Jha—a runner-up in the Hackathon 2.0 competition—ensures uninterrupted access to safe sanitation even in extreme weather conditions.

To demonstrate the potential of CRT technology, FINISH Mondial Bangladesh successfully piloted the system in two flood-prone districts: Gaibandha and Jamalpur.

These pilot projects involved extensive groundwork to ensure success and community acceptance:

  • Training Masons: FINISH Mondial Bangladesh trained local masons and master trainers in the construction of CRTs. This not only ensured high-quality implementation but also built local capacity to scale the technology in the future.
  • Community Awareness: The team conducted awareness campaigns to educate local communities about the benefits and functionality of the CRTs. This helped to generate demand for the technology and foster ownership among end-users.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: In collaboration with government authorities, microfinance institutions (MFIs), and other stakeholders, FINISH Mondial Bangladesh facilitated site selection and supported policy discussions for broader adoption of CRTs.

By integrating local resources and expertise, the pilots laid the foundation for scaling the CRT technology across flood-prone regions in Bangladesh.

Why CRT Matters

Bangladesh faces significant challenges due to climate change, with regions frequently experiencing prolonged flooding and waterlogging. These conditions often compromise traditional sanitation systems, posing health risks and environmental hazards. The CRT technology directly addresses these challenges, ensuring functionality, durability, and sustainability even in adverse conditions.

This workshop will delve into the technical aspects of CRT, highlight its potential impact, and explore pathways for scaling up the technology in flood-prone regions.

Workshop Highlights

  • Technical Presentation: An in-depth look at the CRT’s design and functionality, led by Dr. P.K. Jha.
  • Showcase Video: Visual insights from the pilot phase, emphasizing CRT’s adaptability and community benefits.
  • Open Discussion: A collaborative dialogue on opportunities to adapt and scale CRT technology.

This virtual workshop will serve as a platform to share technical insights and discuss strategies for scaling up the technology. Participants will also explore opportunities for broader adoption of CRTs, fostering collaboration among government agencies, international stakeholders, and local communities.
