Financial inclusion improves sanitation and health (FINISH) started with the support of the Directorate-General for International Cooperation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) as a project by WASTE in 2009 in India. It became a programme in 2013 by expanding to Kenya. Today, FINISH Mondial covers 6 countries and supports construction of over 400,000 safely managed sanitation systems per year mobilising over Euro 350,000 in local financing every day (or well over Euro 120 million per year). FINISH is now ready for the next step: a dedicated organisation, the FINISH Mondial Foundation, to further increase its impact. The FINISH Mondial Foundation (FMF) was registered in 2023 and its launch pre-announced to the water and sanitation community at the Stockholm World Water Week in August 2024. A full scale launch of the FINISH Mondial Foundation is planned for later this year.
Today FINISH supports construction of 1 safely managed sanitation system every 90 seconds (24/7). FMF’s aim is to increase the speed to at least 1 safely managed sanitation system every minute. To this effect FMF will increase its work with impact investors to increase their portfolios and with development partners to increase impact on the ground. FMF is adding new countries, water and organic solid waste management to its sanitation agenda. It further intensifies the sanitation circular agenda by working with agricultural and renewable energy partners.
