Contrary to the progress Ethiopia has made in the water supply sector, the sanitation sector has shown little to no progress and is in alarming state. 28% of the population (more than 28 million people) still practice open defecation. Only 8% of the toilets are improved. The institutional sanitation, such as in schools, is no different; only 3.2% of schools have complete WASH facilities. FINISH will work together with MFIs and SACCOs to finance the sanitation infrastructure, with Health Extension Professionals to create awareness and demand for sanitation, strengthen supply and local government to create the enabling environment to solve both rural and urban sanitation challenges for households and institutions.
